Stopping the courtyard waterfall (Resident Evil)

When you descend in the elevator into the central area of the courtyard, on its northern side is a cascading waterfall. This waterfall is actually produced from the draining water pool you emptied earlier on using the square crank.

You could ascend back up the elevator and block the water gate using the crank, but this would result in the original issue of not being able to cross the water pool due to it being full of water. If you examine the southern side of the central courtyard, you will find that there is another elevator, except this one is not currently working.

How to solve

The solution is simple, you need to find a power source to activate the elevator on the southern side of the central courtyard. The item needed is the battery, which you find after acquiring the helmet key.

Once the battery is in place you can travel back up to the main garden and use the square crank in the water pool to close the water gate, thereby refilling the pool but most importantly stopping the flow of water that creates the waterfall. Then you can go back down the elevator you activated and into the area located behind where the waterfall used to be.
