Solving the laboratory poison gas puzzle (Resident Evil)

Once you gain access to the underground laboratory, there is one room that is locked from the inside and therefore cannot be accessed by any key or by deactivating any electronic lock. This room is the morgue, and you need to be able to access it if you want to fully complete the game 100%, but that will be covered in a different guide.

To access to this room, you must instead visit the operating room. Inside this room there is a small air duct on its western wall that leads through to the morgue. However, this air duct is too high to reach from the ground. The only way to access it is to use the metal set of steps in this room. But directly below the air duct is a button on the ground that, when the steps are pushed over it, releases a deadly poisonous gas into the room from the two small air vents in the floor. If you do happen to trigger the gas, you should leave the room before your character dies. Leaving and re-entering the room is also the only way to reset the puzzle to make it safe again, and this will also reset the position of any of the movable objects.

How to solve

The solution is to push the two large wooden crates over these air vents to prevent the poisonous gas from coming out. You need to place these crates over the vents first before moving the steps into position. There are a number of ways to do this, but shown below is one solution:
